Cornerback, Runningback, Return-Specialist – US-Amerikaner Exavier Edwards ist am Feld eine Alles-Könner. Nun hat der Star-Spieler beim aktuellen Champion aus Wien um ein weiteres Jahr verlängert. Zahlreiche Angebote anderer Franchises in der European League of Football schlug er aus. Der X-Faktor bleibt auch 2023 ein Viking.
„Words can’t describe what Ex brings to the field for the Vikings Franchise. Obviously he makes a difference in all three phases of the game, but it is the energy that he brings to the field and to our family here in Vienna,“ strahlt auch Vienna Vikings Head Coach Chris Calaycay über die Weiter-Verpflichtung des 31-jährigen Ausnahmeathleten aus Kalifornien. Der Meistercoach ist überzeugt davon, dass Edwards den Fans auch in der nächsten Saison viel Freude bereiten und Highlight über Highlight bieten wird: „If you haven’t had a chance to see this man play, make a point of getting to the stadium to watch #7 in 2023.“
Auf die Frage, was seine Entscheidung in Wien zu bleiben, beeinflusst hat, findet Edwards schnell ganz klare Worte: „I decided to resign with Vienna because the main reason for me was simply the teammates which I call my brothers. At Vienna this past season was a true brotherhood so why not make another run at it again.“ Dass die Titelverteidigung das große Ziel des nächsten Jahres ist, daraus macht auch Exavier kein Geheimnis. Im Team gilt er als Energizer und Motivator, spornt seine Teammates zu Höchstleistungen an und ist nie um einen Schmäh verlegen.
Edwards, der in seiner Profikarriere zuvor bereits in der Türkei, Frankreich und Deutschland spielte, hat in Wien so etwas wie eine zweite Heimat gefunden: „I love the whole organization, and the city of Vienna has definitely been welcoming to me. I’m blessed for this situation and ready to go back to work with my brothers and the great coaching staff in the 2023 season. I really can’t!“
