Die Defense Line der Vienna Vikings kann auch 2023 auf die herausragenden Talente von OLB Leon Balogh, DT Oskar Kranich und DE Marvin Wappl vertrauen. Die drei amtierenden Champions verlängern jeweils um ein weiteres Jahr in Wien und verpflichten sich voll der Titelverteidigungs-Devise der Vikings: Run It Back.
7 Sacks, 10.5 Tackles For Loss, 39 Total Tackles und 4 Pass Break-Ups in 12 Spielen der Regular Season – Mit diesen imposanten Zahlen untermauerte Leon Balogh seinen Status als einer der besten europäischen Pass Rusher in der vergangenen Saison. Wenn es nach der #1 im Wiener Franchise geht, dann sollen seine Statistiken in der 2023 Saison der European League of Football noch besser werden: „I plan on becoming the Nr. 1 pass rusher in the league. And leading the rankings in Sacks and TFL’s is what I am going for.“
Dennoch lässt Balogh, der bereits 2019 und 2021 zum NFL International Combine eingeladen war, keinen Zweifel daran, dass ihm persönliche Auszeichnungen bei weitem nicht so wichtig sind wie der Titel und die einzigartige Brotherhood: „Our goals are clear: Defend the title and this time without losing a single game. But most important for me is to keep our brotherhood together and bring fear in our enemies‘ eyes.“
Mit dieser Einstellung wird Balogh wohl auch 2023 wieder der Alptraum so mancher Quarterbacks werden…
Head Coach Chris Calaycay über Wiens #1 Leon Balogh: „Leon may not have had the numbers that we are used to but make no mistake that he is a disruptive force on the edge. He is one of those players that makes everyone around him better and when we need that big pressure in the 4th Quarter or in a big game, he seems to always find a way to make an impact play. It is a big win for our franchise to have #1 back on the field with us.“

Eine Vertragsverlängerungen mit den Vikings stand auch für Defensive Tackle Oskar Kranich außer Frage. „I extended with the Vikings, because I really feel like we got a great shot at running it back this year. I think it’s safe to say that every single person in the organization would be dissatisfied with anything less than a Championship. Me personally, I want perfection. Winning it back to back would be something else – going 14-0 while doing so, would be unheard of,“ so der 23jährige Wiener, der nach 12 Grunddurchgangspielen mit 5 Sacks, 8.5 Tackles For Loss, 32 Total Tackles und 2 Fumble Recoveries reüssierte.
Im Playoff-Spiel gegen Barcelona sowie im Championship Game gegen Hamburg war Kranich eine der tragenden, defensiven Konstanten. Dass er sich am Ende der Regular Season einem kleinen Eingriff am Meniskus unterziehen musste, tat seiner starken Post-Season Performance keinen Abbruch. Darum sind seine persönlichen Ziele für die nahende European League of Football Saison auch simpel formuliert: „I want to stay healthy and help my teammates win ballgames.“
Für Kranich markierte 2022 ein besonders erfolgreiches Jahr. Neben dem ELF Titel konnte er auch als Coach einen Titel holen. Das AFC Vienna Vikings U18 Team, wo Kranich die D-Line trainiert, wurde nach einer Perfect Season österreichischer Meister.
„Our long time Viking is back for another season,“ so Head Coach Chris Calaycay über die wichtige Weiterverpflichtung seiner Nummer 52, Oskar Kranich: „Oskar is just a pure technician. Not the biggest Defensive Tackle but able to hold the point and split double teams. He is another one of those important guys in our defense that makes the whole thing work.“

Mit Marvin Wappl geben die Vienna Vikings den dritten D-Liner am heutigen Tag bekannt. Der 29jährige Veteran ist in der Form seines Lebens und will die 2023 Season zu einer besonders Erinnerungswürdigen machen: „This year is poised to be the pinnacle of my football career. I am currently in the best shape I’ve been in for a long time and fully prepared to give my all on the field, aiming to create a season that will remain memorable.“
Wappl, der eigentlich Ende 2021 seine Cleats für immer an den Nagel hängen wollte, bereut keine Sekunde seine Entscheidung weiter zu spielen: „It’s not a matter of how long I extend with the Vikings, but rather why. Playing for the Vikings isn’t about stats and winning games. It’s about being part of a family, a community of people who have each other’s backs – on and off the field. Victory is just the reward for our effort and dedication to the sport. That’s why I’m so committed to working hard and having a blast while we crush our goals and defend our throne in the upcoming championship.“
Auch Head Coach Chris Calaycay freut sich darüber, Marvin weiterhin an Bord des Wikingerschiffs zu haben und prophezeit ihm die vielleicht beste Saison seiner bisherigen Karriere: „Our veteran defensive lineman made a brief „retirement“ after the 2021 season to return to the Vikings in the European League of Football. I think he found the fountain of youth, because he has put in an incredible off-season, is in great shape and is looking to make 2023 his best season yet.“
Die Mission Titelverteidigung hat natürlich für die österreichischen Spieler bereits vor Monaten mit dem optionalen Strength & Conditioning Training in der Off-Season begonnen. Ab Dienstag, dem 21. März geht es dann für die Homegrown Players erstmals mit Pads & Helmets aufs Feld, wenn die Indy Sessions zwei Mal pro Woche losgehen. Ein paar Wochen müssen sich Balogh, Kranich, Wappl und ihre Teammates noch gedulden, ehe das erste offizielle Team-Training – inklusive der amerikanischen und europäischen Importspieler – am 2. Mai über die Bühne gehen kann.
